HARTMAN, Sergeant, Company F, 107th Engineers, 32nd Division.He was a member of a patrol sent out from thebattalion post of command at midnight, August 4,1918, to reconnoiter the Vesle River front, nearFismes, for the location of possible sites for pontoonbridges and of material for making such structures.Despite heavy artillery and machine-gun fire thatforced the patrol to scatter and separated him fromthe lieutenant in charge, he continued the work onhis own initiative, and, acting entirely without orders,started his detail on the actual construction of raftsfor the pontoon bridges. His courage, ability as aleader, and his inflexible determination made thereconnaissance a complete success.In his portrait Sergeant Hartman is exhibiting twocubes of T N T, the wire used in fastening theexplosive, and a spool of time-fuse.Distinguished Service Cross.
