upon the shoulder of a youth without encoutrement, but with certain details of the soldier, the group representing the State of Virginia, surrendering the weapon of strife, but never her honor and manhood. On either side of the pedestal, and up close to the same, is a group of three soldiers in the midst of battle, in different positions, and they are good. I do not think there is any figure or group on the rear face or opposite end of the die. The entire composition I consider very fine, providing the figure is not too high in the air to be thoroughly appreciated and seen by the average visitor. However, that height was necessary in order to get in the compositions around the base of the die. If Mr. Sievers finally completes this memorial and makes a good a horse and rider as his model contemplates, and appears to suggest, I consider that it will be far away the most artistic memorial on the field, as far as art work is concerned. Whether the Commission have been wise in their selection of so small an object in concession with a state memorial, and how Mr. Sievers will provide the necessary surface for 101 Virginia Comands, remains to be proven. I think you will like Mr. Sievers personally, and while I have only known him a couple of years, first meeting with him at Harrisburg in connection with the State of Pennsylvania memorial at Petersburg, I am impressed with the man’s personality, and ability.
