Rotating drum with several rings of sheet-metal cams which depress switches that activate effects such as steam, flashes of red light and rumble in the "volcano" beyond.
The caption sign above the enclosure reads
This is the apparatus that controls the volcano. It was made by Henry Legano, and is operated by the gentleman turning the crank. (Sound effect by Bob Halliard.)
The gentleman turning the crank is an artists model human figure painted red with horns attached to the forehead. The hands are attached to a crank on a chain driven wheel (powered by the motor above) to appear as the articulated [demon] is forever cranking.
Audio amplifier for sound effects triggered by the drum cam switches.
"Volcano#United_States_of_America" assembled from Pisgash Mountain lava rock, equipped with a boiler that rumbled, hissed, and spit steam, speakers and lights which simulated vulcan activity.
