Mother's notes:
"We were warned not to take Rubles in or out of Russia, leave all our jewelry on the ship. Carry passports - they were very carefully checked. We were told to watch for pickpockets, remain constantly aware of possessions. Actually we felt much safer in St Petersburg than in most cities in the USA.
We saw NO new or modern buildings.
St Petersburg made us sad - it seemed so very poor & run down. Old crumbling buildings and little restoration. Streets full of potholes. People seemed poor & depressed. Our guides tried to put a positive face on everything. They said, 'Yeltsin is healthy as a horse, he is not sick, he is strong. He only drinks a lot - no problem.' "
