Summary[edit]

Description
English: Built in 1849, this Greek Revival-style building was constructed for John Dunn to serve as a hotel, known as Dunn’s Hotel, in the western portion of the building, as well as Dunn's grocery and dry goods business in the eastern portion of the building. The building was utilized as a temporary Washington County Courthouse and a Confederate Hospital during the Civil War, and after the war, resumed operation as a hotel. The building became known as The Virginia House Hotel after Dunn’s death. In 1873, Dunn’s sons sold the eastern portion of building to the Bank of Abingdon, and in 1879, the western portion of the building was sold to Frank S. Findlay, whom operated it as The Arlington House Hotel. The three-story building features a red brick exterior, side-gable roof, twelve-over-twelve and eight-over-twelve double-hung windows with decorative lintels and stone sills, a main entrance door with a fanlight transom, and a stone base. The building is a contributing structure in the Abingdon Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970. Since 1962, the building has housed law offices, and in 1965, the building was restored, with both halves now serving as a single building.
