Précisions sur l'utilisation | Pour Auguste Théodore Vidal, la trépanation consiste à la perforation d’un os et est donc associée à l’outil vilebrequin, qui, à la base, était utilisé par les ouvriers pour percer le bois, la pierre ou les métaux. Le trépan français est donc un vilebrequin dont la mèche est au centre d’une scie circulaire. Utilisée essentiellement sur l’os du crâne, cette méthode à ce lieu-là fut restreinte pendant que les cas de trépanation des autres os sur presque tout le squelette augmentaient. Comme les opérations se pratiquaient sur plusieurs types et forme d’os, différentes scies ont été créées et modifiées pour qu’elles soient plus ou moins courbe ou droite au lieu d’être circulaire.

Description en langage naturel | D’après Robert James, le vilebrequin est né au commencement de l’utilisation de la poudre dans les combats car les instruments d’alors (des pincettes) ne permettaient pas d’extraire les balles de mousquets. Ils imaginèrent donc « entre autres un vilebrequin en forme de vis, renfermé dans une cannule, afin de le pouvoir porter sûrement dans le fond de la plaie […] pour lors, en tournant le vilebrequin, on le fait enfoncer dans le plomb, qui est mou de sa nature, jusqu’à ce qu’il accroche suffisamment pour que la balle vienne avec le vilebrequin lorsqu’on le retire. » | |||||||||||||||||||||||
