Summary[edit]

Description
English: This image is cropped from figure 144 of SP-441. This view of the Martian atmosphere and surface is taken through the Viking Orbiter violet filter to illustrate the dramatic change in the clarity of the atmosphere in the region east and northeast of the Argyre basin during winter in the southern hemisphere. The image is taken just after the winter solstice when solar heating is minimal.
