Summary[edit]

Description
English: The top of the Hill of Ares (Areopagus). According to the myth this is where the trial of Ares took place by the other gods. Ares had killed one of Poseidon’s sons who had dishonored one of his daughters. Between the 16th and the 7th cent. B.C. the side of the hill facing the Ancient Agora was used as a cemetery. The Areopagus Council met on the hill to judge over cases of murder, and sacrilege. In the 6th cent. B.C. the hillside becomes a residential area, part of the prestigious Deme of Melite. In the 1st cent. A.D. Apostle Paul preached from the top of the hill and converted several Athenians to Christianity. The most illustrious among them was Dionysius the Areopagite, the patron saint of Athens.
