The origins of Portchester Castle date back to the Roman era. Originally a fort, a castle was built on the site after the Norman Conquest, and further extended by the Plantagenet kings, in particular King John and Edward II. After 1665, Portchester Castle frequently housed prisoners of war, especially during the Napoleonic Wars of 1793 - 1815. The castle was privately owned by the Thistlehouse family from 1819 onwards, and in 1984 the site passed into the care of English Heritage.
