Description
English: A view of Hong Kong

View of Hong Kong showing Victoria Peak, the anchorage filled with ships flying American and English merchant and naval flags, with smaller surrounding junks
In the centre of the picture is the River Bird an American steamer, 527 tons, built in New York. She cost 93,000 USD in total, her Beam Engine costing 23,000 USD. She plied between Canton and Hong Kong. A wooden side-wheel steamer of 527 tons, was built at Brooklyn, New York in the United States for Robert Sturgis, J.B. Endicott and Gideon Nye Jr. She sailed from New York on 5 February 1855 under Captain Sampson, and arrived in Macao on 24 May 1855, and was consigned to Captain Endicott, who was evidently the managing owner. Masters by 27 October 1855 were J.W. Paul and later F.H. Duval.
