Summary[edit]

Description
English: View from the churchyard, Eaton Eaton is set in the River Devon valley between Lings Hill to the south and Terrace Hills and the Vale of Belvoir to the north. The church is set on commanding high ground to the east of the village and there are lovely views to Lings Hill from the churchyard. The cottages seen here are on Main Street and are just in the featured square. The one to the right, with decorative brickwork, "TW1774", is Old Moore's Cottage and has horizontal sliding sash windows rather than the more traditional casements. It was once the home of Thomas Wright, an amateur astronomer supposedly born here in 1774. He reputably bought up the rights to publish Old Moore's Almanack around 1800, hence the name of the cottage. His wife is buried in the churchyard in a grand tomb but Thomas is in an ordinary grave with an insignificant head stone. Old Moore's Almanack was first published in 1700 under the title Vox Stellarum/Voices of the Stars, by Francis Moore (1657–c. 1715), an astrologer in the court of King Charles II. It became so popular that it sold 107,000 copies in 1768. It is still published annually today, predicting of world and sporting events, as well as more conventional data such as tide tables.
