| Description |
English: View from near Pembroke Lodge down over Surrey In the background are the white walls of Pembroke Lodge, looking down over the blue hills of Surrey. In the foreground stands one of Richmond Park's famous ancient pollarded oak trees. There are still over 800 trees in the park (2007) which were already there when the park was enclosed by Charles I in 1637. There are even a few trees which date back to extensive forestry planting in the mid-1300s, when the Black Death caused a shortage of agricultural labour. Pollarding was a timber-farming process in which the tree branches were cut off at a height of 3 metres, and then left to regrow. The tree has a characterful, gnarled and stubby appearance. |
