Summary[edit]
DescriptionVieille machine a ecrire 1.jpg | Smith Premier typewriter, originally invented by Alexander Brown at the L. C. Smith Gun Co. around 1889, which became the Smith Premier Typewriter Co., Syracuse, NY, USA. The Smith was an upstrike typewriter, meaning that the keys struck the paper on the roller from underneath, so the typist couldn't see her work as she typed. To see her work, the typist had to tilt the carriage back on hinges. It had a full keyboard; upper and lower case letters had separate keys. This model, the No. 3 first produced in 1901, had 84 keys. A unique feature of some models was an internal brush that could be turned with a crank to clean the typefaces. For more information, see Smith Premier 1, The Virtual Typewriter Museum |
