English: Vamana, the dwarf incarnation of Vishnu
Mughal India, about 1610 Mughal artists depicted Hindu religious and narrative subjects, and this painting of Vamana may have been based on an actual dark-skinned dwarf. Despite his simple clothing Vamana carries an elegant gold ewer and wears several strands of beads and an earring. Although the light brown beads may have been seeds or made of wood, the white ones appear to be pearls or possibly shells. |
