Summary[edit]

Description
English: An anesthetized hutia, colloquially known as a banana rat, lays on an examination table before being fitted with a GPS harness at the Guantanamo Bay Veterinary Treatment Facility, April 13. The purpose of the GPS unit is to track the migration patterns of the local hutia population. The hutia, nicknamed "Thor" during the procedure, will be tracked for the next three to four months before being recaptured to gather the information stored in the harness. The veterinary clinic serves primarily to treat the pets of service members and Department of Defense employees assigned to JTF Guantanamo and the Naval Station. JTF Guantanamo conducts safe, humane, legal and transparent care and custody of detainees, including those convicted by military commission and those ordered released by a court. The JTF conducts intelligence collection, analysis and dissemination for the protection of detainees and personnel working in JTF Guantanamo facilities and in support of the War on Terror. JTF Guantanamo provides support to the Office of Military Commissions, to law enforcement and to war crimes investigations. The JTF conducts planning for and, on order, responds to Caribbean mass migration operations.
