| Description |
This wavy-haired female head is covered with a veil with a central fold, a motif widespread in the mid-4th century BC the most famous example of which is the “Demeter of Cnidus" (British Museum, no. 1300). For this reason, the head is sometimes thought to be a variation, made between the 3rd and the 1st century BC, on the “Demeter of Cnidus" type. The perfunctory carving of the back of the head may also be a sign that it originally formed part of a funeral effigy or a decorative high-relief.
