Deutsch: Bildnis der Kaiserin Elisabeth Christine, Prinzessin von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel (1691-1750). Elisabeth Christine von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel, Tochter des Herzogs Ludwig Rudolf und der Christine Luise Prinzessin zu Oettingen-Oettingen, war seit 1708 mit dem Erzherzog Karl, zu diesem Zeitpunkt als Karl III. spanischer Gegenkönig, verheiratet. 1711, nach dem Tod seines Bruders Kaiser Joseph I., verließ der Erzherzog Spanien, um als Karl VI. dessen Nachfolge in der Kaiserwürde anzutreten. Er ernannte seine Frau zu seiner Stellvertreterin in Spanien, wo sie bis 1713 verblieb. Karl und Elisabeth Christine führten, gemessen nach damaligen Maßstäben, eine glückliche Ehe. Ihres hellen Teints wegen nannte er sie seine “weiße Liesl”. Vier Kinder wurden dem Paar geboren, allerdings starb der lang ersehnte Sohn und Thronfolger kurz nach der Geburt. Der sog. Pragmatischen Sanktion von 1713 entsprechend, folgte die älteste Tochter Maria Theresia dem Vater in den habsburgischen Erblanden. Nach einem wittelsbachischen Intermezzo unter Kaiser Karl VII. wurde Franz Stephan von Lothringen, Elisabeth Christines Schwiegersohn, 1750 zum Kaiser gewählt. Die Kaiserinwitwe hatte ein gutes Verhältnis zu ihrer Tochter, die den Tod der Mutter tief betrauerte.
