Summary[edit]
DescriptionVan Kirk Homestead Museum in July 2017.jpg |
English: The Sparta Historical Society runs the Van Kirk Homestead Museum and Educational Center for the benefit of the people of Sparta Township and Sussex County. Their outstanding multi-thematic exhibitions focus on topics of local to regional interest.
According to its "Sparta Register of Historic Sites - 2007" plaque, "Thomas [Van Kirk], who settled in Sparta ca.1775, bought this land in 1780 for 9000 lbs. He was a blacksmith, farmer, justice of the peace and an original trustee of the Hardyston (Sparta) Presbyterian Church [NRHP] - 1786." The homestead includes several barns and sheds as outbuildings. They all sit alongside Sparta's middle school. "It remained a family farm until the Board of Education bought most of it in 1996. The remainder is still occupied and farmed by two of his descendants." The Sparta Historical Society first opened the home to visitors in 2007. |
