Description |
English: Henry Van Asselt was born in Holland in 1817. In 1851, he and several others settled in the Duwamish River valley, where Boeing now stands. Van Asselt's land claim is slightly older than that of the Denny Party, making him one of the Seattle area's earliest white settlers. Van Asselt was a successful farmer and furniture maker. In 1862, he married Catherine Elizabeth Jane Maple, and the couple had one son and three daughters. This photo, taken sometime before 1887, shows the Van Asselt family. From left to right, are Henry Van Asselt, daughters Mary Adrian and Ellenette, son Jacob, daughter Harriet Jane, and wife Catherine. Original photograph: not after 1887. Copied after 1975 by the Museum of History and Industry.
