Notes Wallerant Vaillant is regarded as one of the forerunners of pastel portraiture. He applied black and white chalk, and sometimes also pastel, on paper in powered form, anticipating techniques employed by eighteenth-century masters. The girl is wearing a simple dress in line with Calvinist ideals of modesty and contempt for ostentation. In spite of the demage to the surface of the drawing, the girl's delicate smile and vivid gaze are still visible.
