Summary[edit]

Description
English: One single fieldline of an ideal dipole inside the image plane. The same field shape arises from a point-like electic dipole (electric field) or a point-like magnetic dipole (magnetic field). The electric dipole can be thought of as two different charges put very close together and the magnetic dipole as a very small conductor loop carrying current.
Each fieldline of a perfect dipole has exactly the same shape and only varies in size. Thus the depicted line acts as a model for all dipole field lines.
