Summary[edit]

Description
English: Completed in 1963, this lock was built to provide shipping access upriver of Saint Anthony Falls to serve industry on the north side of Minneapolis. Rising 49 feet, the lock is the tallest along the Mississippi River, comprising more than 10% of the total vertical rise of locks along the river. The lock features concrete walls and an overall utilitarian design, with a buff-brick modernist administration building featuring large windows and curved corners. The lock was in operation until 2015, when it was closed in order to prevent the spread of invasive species, especially Asian Carp, to the upper Mississippi River. The lock is operated by the National Parks Service as part of the Saint Anthony Falls Visitor Center complex, and is open to visitors.
