Summary[edit]

Description
English: Unstable cliffs and long groyne at Hengistbury Head. The sandy cliffs of Hengistbury Head have been rapidly eroded over the past few centuries, mainly as a result of human activity. The primary cause of this instability was the removal of ironstone boulders from the beach and seabed (for use in iron production) here and further along the coast in Bournemouth. The Hengistbury long groyne, visible in the photo, was built in 1938 to help slow down the erosion and longshore drift. Lots more details at http://www.hengistbury.head.btinternet.co.uk/ On this misty and rainy day the sea merged almost seamlessly into the sky.
