English: The University College of Engineering, Thiruvananthapuram, is a direct undertaking of the revered University of Kerala, with the singular motive of becoming a model institution for technical education within the state and the country. Functioning directly under the University of Kerala automatically qualifies this institution for a close relationship with the vast resources of the University and facilitates prompt response to all its needs.The university of Travancore, which later became the University of Kerala, was established in 1937 by a promulgation of the Maharaja of Travancore, Sri Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma who was also the first Chancellor of the University. Sir. C P Ramaswamy Ayyar, the then Diwan of the state, was the first Vice-Chancellor. It was the sixteenth University to be set up in India and ten colleges within the state of Travancore which were affiliated to the Madras University became the affiliated colleges of the University of Travancore.

In 1957, the Kerala University Act, Act 14 of 1957, was brought into force and the University of Travancore was renamed University of Kerala. The University had three campuses located in Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam and Calicut. In 1968, the University Centre at Calicut became a full-Fledged University covering the colleges and Departments located in Thrissur, Palakkad, Calicut and Kannur Districts of Kerala. The Cochin University of Science and Technology and the Kerala Agricultural University were set up in 1971 and in 1983, the Mahatma Gandhi University was establised. With the establishment of these univeresities, the area of the jurisdiction of the University of Kerala has been limited to Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha Districts and some parts of Pathanamthitta District.

There are 227 affiliated colleges. Of these, 64 are Arts and Science colleges. They include 10 Government Colleges, 37 aided and 17 unaided institutions. There are two Law colleges, 39 Engineering colleges (of which two are Government colleges, one is aided and 35 are unaidfed, one under direct management),one College of Architecture(unaided),seven Medical Colleges(five self financing) 50 Teacher's Training Colleges(one Government, six aided and 43 unaided) four Ayurveda Colleges(three are unaided),two Homeopathy Colleges, one College of special Education(self Financing), one Siddha Medical College(self financing), two Fine arts Colleges(Government),one Music College(Government), five Dental Colleges(of which four are unaided), five unaided Pharmacy Colleges and one College of Physical Education. Besides these, there are nine affiliated institutions conducting two year full time MBA course(one government in existing Government Engineering College, one aided in existing aided Engineering College, one unaided in existing Engineering/Arts and science College) of which six are self financing. Four colleges offering MCA. There are 24 Nursing Colleges (22 self financing), three unaided hotel Management and Catering Technology Colleges, two Para Medical Colleges. The University College of Engineering Kariavattom which is under the direct management of the university offers B.Tech in Information Technology, computer Science & Engineering and Electronics & Communication.

The college was established in the year 2000 and is functioning in the Golden Jubilee Complex of the Kerala University in the Kariavattom campus. The institution is fast acquiring a reputation for high quality education and fabulous faculty –student rapport. The college has already benefited greatly from its location, being adjacent to the Technopark, the IT hub of the state. Facilities in the Technopark are open to students for learning and University-Industry interaction takes place regularly.

The University is taking initiatives to impart soft skills like communication skills (verbal and nonverbal) and analytical skills as per industry requirements. The college functions with the highest order of discipline so that all students are trained to excel in highly professional environments. The students of various departments organize national level technical symposiums. With the students displaying great aptitude for academic, technical, sporting and cultural endeavors along with the active support of the University, the College is on the right track to soon becoming one of the finest technical institutions in the country.
