Summary[edit]

Description

A detour on my way to Las Vegas to finish 2012.

My travels earlier in 2012 had taken me to Boeing's widebody assembly plant in Everett, Washington, where new airplanes are born; now I am at a place where the Everett planes come to retire and die.

Rather close to the western Perimeter Road and its fence, a pair of United 767-200s are parked. While one of them, City of Chicago (N606UA), remains painted, this one has had its paint stripped off long ago. Additionally the engines and a few other parts have been removed, though nothing else is happening with this aircraft - not even parting out or dismantling.

No registration numbers are visible on this aircraft, though it must be one of these three: N601UA, N602UA, or N615UA. N613UA and N614UA were also stored at Victorville though they have since been scrapped. All other United 767-200s, except for N612UA which was destroyed while operating United 175 on 11 September 2001, found new operators, and today United is flying a newer batch of 767-200ERs inherited from the Continental merger.

The background shows dozens of aircraft in storage, including defunct Mexicana's Boeing 717 fleet as well as some Boeing 737 classics that were retired from United service in 2009. All Boeing 737s in the current United fleet were inherited from Continental.
