I am visiting San Francisco for the Pride weekend - one that turned out to be the most historic of them all, thanks to the Supreme Court rulings that legal same-sex marriages cannot be denied federal benefits, and that Proposition 8, which had banned same-sex marriages in California in late 2008, is dead on a legal technicality. An awesome contingent from San Francisco's largest airline. Only a few decades earlier, the airline industry was a very uptight, conservative, homophobic place, but San Francisco's insistence that airlines serving the city respect its LGBT employees and their partners, and United becoming the first airline to comply worldwide in 1999, changed the tone for the better. I myself personally appreciated United's LGBT-friendliness, especially when flying to homophobic destinations, and this is one reason why I have continued to book about 90% of my air travel with United. United also fielded contingents on this very same day at other Pride parades in some of its other hub cities, including Chicago, Houston, and New York City. "Diversity Flies with Us" was the slogan, but I would've preferred a variation on the old "Friendly Skies" slogan - in fact I've referred to United as the "Lesbian-Friendly Skies" since 1999.
