English: I am heading for Amsterdam for the millennial holiday season, using $600 in United Airlines credits that were the bumping compensation for my 1998 Europe trip.
This aircraft will be my initial ride, taking me as far as London Heathrow. It is parked at a gate in the American Airlines portion of Terminal 3. Normally Terminal 2 handled all international departures in 1999, but it was full, so United was sharing an American gate nearby during the late morning rush hour for one of its international departures. United's own Terminal 3 gates, further away, handled only domestic flights. (This arrangement ended when the new international terminal opened in 2000 and Terminal 2 was closed for renovations.) United Airlines pampered me with an inflight audio channel playing exclusively music from my favorite lesbian rock goddess, Melissa Etheridge. A very Sapphic touch for the millennial holiday season, and very appreciated as the rest of the trip, including Amsterdam, was far from Sapphic. At London Heathrow, I was to transfer to another United flight for the final leg to Amsterdam, but due to high winds at Schiphol, the connection was cancelled, and I was transferred to Air France to wait the winds out at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport. I arrived in Amsterdam 6 hours late, and door-to-door time from my Concord apartment to my Amsterdam hotel was 26 hours (some of it also attributable to a BART fire as I left home). N205UA, though factory-new and only a few months old at this time, was a leased aircraft, and upon United's bankruptcy, the lease was terminated. The aircraft went on to fly for Air India (VT-AIK) and now Transaero of Russia (EI-UNV). United ran, and still runs, two daily flights from San Francisco to London Heathrow, one midday departure and one late afternoon departure. Flight numbers are 930 and 954.
