Accession#: 86-287-B Object Title: Uniform, Epaulet All commissioned Captains wore epaulets with "the strap to be 2.3/4 inches wide and 6 inches long; frog, 4.3/4 inches wide; crescent 11/16 of an inch in the broadest part; bullion 3 inches long and half an inch in diameter. A silver spread eagle in the center, with a spread oak leaf embroidered in dead gold, with an acorn embroidered in silver upon it. " (1897 Uniform Regulations) Provenance: This is one epaulet from the Collection of Admiral Nelson Mc Pherson Ferebee. Nelson Ferebee entered the University of Maryland medical school in October 1867. After graduating in 1871, he enlisted in the Navy in September 1872, as an assistant surgeon. He proceeded to serve on the USS Portsmouth, the USS Pensacola, USS Jamestown, USS Trenton and finally USS Indiana during the Spanish-American War. At the end of the war, Ferebee was transferred to Washington Navy Yard where he remained until his retirement in 1904. Collection of Curator Branch NHHC. |
