Summary[edit]

Description

Seen in the vending area.

When using vending machines, Canadians have it easy, as coins go up to $2. But visiting Americans, for whom $1 is still a paper note, are not so lucky. This machine, made in Indianapolis, will take a US dollar bill and spit out Canadian coins, so that vending machine purchases can be made, though I presume that the exchange rate would be 1:1, which would've been slightly lousier than the prevailing rate at the time of the photo.

The reluctance to change currencies is one sure way to spot visiting Americans in Canada. As for me, as long as I am in a foreign country, I will carry only that country's currency.

Americans are often also given away by talking about "American money" rather than "US currency" or "US dollars," and by talking about "the one-dollar coin" and "the two-dollar coin" rather than their Canadian nicknames, the loonie and the toonie, respectively.
