Dan Burque, research liaison officer with the Office of Naval Research (ONR), assists a student operate an underwater remotely operated vehicle (ROV) at the Eastern States Exposition -- known as The Big "E" -- to demonstrate SeaPerch robotics concepts and as well as Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) learning opportunities that ONR offers in collaboration with the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers. The SeaPerch Program, designed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, teaches underwater robotics to middle and high school students via hands-on activities, such as building their own underwater robots. This ROV display was just one of several displays made available to the general public during the kickoff of New England Navy Week 2011, one of 21 Navy Weeks being held this year across the country. New England Navy Week 2011 runs from Sept. 24 to Oct. 2. Navy Weeks are designed to showcase the investment Americans have made in their Navy as a global force for good and increase awareness in cities that do not have a significant Navy presence.
