English: GREAT LAKES, Ill. (Sept. 16, 2010) Dr. Talib Hussain, senior scientist at BBN Technologies, looks over the shoulder of a recruit during a training session on the Virtual Environments for Ship and Shore Experiential Learning system at Recruit Training Command. The system is a computer game-based, first person role-playing training system that prepares recruits to handle Battle Stations, the final 12-hour test of 17 shipboard scenarios. The Battle Stations scenario includes fighting fires and stopping compartment flooding, and is required for recruits to graduate. (U.S. Navy photo by Scott A. Thornbloom/Released)

Image title | NAVAL STATION GREAT LAKES, Ill. (September 16, 2010) -- Dr. Talib Hussain, Senior Scientist at BBN Technologies, looks over the shoulder of a recruit at the Navy's only boot camp, Recruit Training Command (RTC), as he trains on VESSEL (Virtual Environments for Ship and Shore Experiential Learning), a computer game-based, first person role-playing, training system. VESSEL prepares recruits to handle Battle Stations, the final 12-hour test of 17 shipboard scenarios that includes fighting fires and stopping compartment flooding, before they graduate from boot camp. Another goal of VESSEL is to prepare recruits to navigate around a ship and for shipboard scenarios when they get to the fleet. Hussain and BBN Technologies, along with IDSI (Intelligent Decisions Systems Inc.); the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA); the University of Central Florida (UCF); the Office of Naval Research; Recruit Training Command (RTC) and the Learning Strategies (N9) Department at Naval Service Training Command (NSTC) here, make up the partners that have developed and continue improving VESSEL.
