Image title | USS ESSEX (LHD 2), At Sea -- Amphibious assault ship USS Essex (LHD 2), right, conducts a refueling at sea, June 15, with Australian auxiliary oiler replenishment vessel HMAS Sirius (AOR 266), as amphibious dock transport USS Tortuga (LSD 46) approaches, during Exercise Talisman Saber 2007. Essex took on more than 690,000 gallons of diesel fuel from the oiler. Exercise Talisman Saber 07 (TS07) is a U.S. and Australian lead Joint Task Force operation preparing our militaries for crisis action planning and execution of contingency operations. TS07 is designed to maintain a high level of interoperability between U.S. and Australian forces, demonstrating the U. S. and Australian commitment to our military alliance and regional security. The exercise also supports increased flexibility and readiness, which are force multipliers in winning the Global War on Terror. Essex is the only forward-deployed amphibious assault ship and serves Task Force 76, the Navy's only forward-deployed amphibious force. Task Force 76 is headquartered at White Beach Naval Facility, Okinawa, Japan, with an operating detachment in Sasebo, Japan. U.S. Navy Photograph by Mass Communications 1st Class Jeremy L.
