Description
English: Philippines Sea (Oct. 29, 2006) - Chief Aviation Boatswain’s Mate Marc Hermosura gives the clear to launch signal as Chief Aviation Boatswain’s Mate John Strickland trains Aviation Boatswain’s Mate 1st Class Fernell Slack on the proper procedure to launch a AV-8 Harrier off the flight deck of USS Essex (LHD 2). Essex and 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) have been in the Philippines participating in bilateral exercises, Exercise Talon Vision and Amphibious Landing Exercise (PHIBLEX 07), with the armed forces of the Philippines. Essex is the Navy’s only forward deployed amphibious assault ship and is the flagship for the Essex Amphibious Ready Group based in Sasebo, Japan.
