Image title | CHEMERIL, Kenya -- August 15, 2006 -- A Pokot girl poses for a photograph during the Veterinary Civil Assistance Project (VETCAP) operated by U.S., Kenyan, Tanzanian and Ugandan veterinarians and doctors. Her neckpiece signifies that she is engaged to be married. She is not considered an adult yet because she does not wear either the second neckpiece, signifying her marriage, or the traditional black feather on her head, signifying her circumcision. In this part of Kenya, female circumcision is common, and, among the Pokot, is considered a rite of passage into female adulthood.
