Summary[edit]

Description
English: Gulf of Mexico (July 7, 2005) – Graphic depicting the expected track of Hurricane Dennis. The Category 2 hurricane, on the Saffir-Simpson rating scale, with winds up to 105 mph is expected to make landfall early Monday. The season's first hurricane was rated a Category Two meaning winds were above 96 mph but less than 110 mph. A projected track still shows the storm moving into the eastern Gulf of Mexico early Saturday, then aiming close to some key oil and gas fields off the coasts of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama before making landfall near the Mississippi/Alabama border very early Monday. Forecasters anticipate significant strengthening prior to landfall. In addition, a hurricane watch remains in effect for portions of central and eastern Cuba. As of 8 a.m. EDT (1200 GMT), Dennis was located 130 miles east-southeast of Kingston, Jamaica, and about 165 miles south of Naval Station Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The storm was moving northwest at 10 mph, but was expected to start moving west-northwest. The Atlantic hurricane season began June 1 and ends Nov. 30.
