English: Taranto, Italy (June 18, 2005) - U.S. Navy civilian contractor Nate Kibbler, top left, lowers Dave Diepenhorst into the water in an Atmospheric Diving System (ADS 2000) from the salvage ship USS Grasp (ARS 51) in support of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) submarine escape and rescue exercise Sorbet Royal 2005. Grasp transported the Atmospheric Diving System 2000 (ADS 2000), Submarine Rescue Chamber Eight (SRC 8) along with members of the U.S. Navy's deep submergence unit. Twenty-seven participating nations, including 14 NATO nations will test their capabilities and interoperability. Four submarines with up to 52 crewmembers aboard will be placed on the bottom of the ocean, while rescue forces with rescue vehicles and systems work together to solve complex disaster rescue problems. Image title | TARANTO, ITALY (June 18, 2005) -- U.S. Navy civilian contractor Nate Kibbler (top left) lowers the Atmospheric Diving System (ADS 2000) into the water. U.S. Navy civilian contractor Dave Diepenhorst mans the suit as it's launched off USS Grasp (ARS 51) in support of the NATO submarine escape and rescue exercise Sorbet Royal 2005 running June 17-30. The civilian company OceanWorks designed the suit to protect a diver down to 2,000 feet and Sorbet Royal 2005 is the first operational test of the ADS 2000 suit since the U.S. Navy acquired it. Unlike other diving suits, this one enables a diver to return to the surface as fast as he needs to, without the requirement for decompression. The suit is aboard USS Grasp (ARS 51) along with Submarine Rescue Chamber 8 (SRC 8) and members of the U. S. Navy's Deep Submergence Unit. Divers from various nations will work together to rescue submariners during the exercise in the Mediterranean off the coast of Taranto, Italy from June 17-30, 2005. Sorbet Royal 2005 is the largest and most challenging live submarine escape and rescue exercise ever conducted. Participating nations will test their capabilities and interoperability with 27 participating nations (including 14 NATO nations, Russia, Ukraine and Israel). Four submarines will be placed on the bottom (each with up to 52 men aboard) while rescue forces with a range of sophisticated rescue vehicles and systems work together to solve complex disaster rescue problems in a variety of difficult scenarios.
