English: Norfolk, Va. (Jan. 19, 2005) – The amphibious assault ship USS Saipan (LHA 2) pulls away from a pier at Naval Station Norfolk, Va., as she begins a two-month deployment to the U.S. Southern Command (NAVSO) area of responsibility in support of the humanitarian assistance exercise in Haiti entitled New Horizons. The exercise will constitute the first deployment of elements of an Expeditionary Strike Group to the Southern Command area of responsibility and will provide opportunities for the United States to partner with its neighbors in bringing relief to hurricane ravaged Haiti, while also providing a considerable maritime presence to the Caribbean.
