Description
English: Chicago, Ill. (Feb. 21, 2004) – Sailors assigned to the Naval Station Great Lakes Funeral Detail fold the National Ensign in honor of William Sylvester White. Dubbed “The Golden 13”, he was one of the Navy’s first 13 African-American officers. Mr. White, 79, served in the Navy from 1943-1946, and earned the rank of Lieutenant (junior grade). Following his commission at Naval Training Station, Great Lakes in 1944, he served as a public affairs officer at both Ninth Naval District and in Washington, D.C. A 1937 graduate of the University of Chicago Law School, White served as an Illinois Appellate Court Judge in the last years of his career. He returned to Great Lakes several times including for the dedication of the Golden 13 Recruit In-processing Center, June 5, 1987, and for the 50th anniversary celebration of the Golden 13’s commissioning in 1994.
