English: Bethesda, Md. (Jun. 18, 2003) -- The main entrance of the National Naval Medical Center, Bethesda, which first opened February 5, 1942. President Roosevelt dedicated the center six months later on August 31, 1942, the 100th anniversary of the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery. The Medical Center was originally comprised of the Naval Hospital (designed to hold 1,200 beds), the Naval Medical School, the Naval Dental School (now the National Naval Dental Center), and the Naval Medical Research Institute. In 1945, at the end of World War II, temporary buildings were added to accommodate 2,464 wounded American Sailors and Marines. With the outbreak of the Korean War, the medical center's capacity once again rose, this time to 1,167 beds in July 1951. U.S. Navy photo by Chief Warrant Officer Seth Rossman. (RELEASED) |
