Summary[edit]

Description
English: Off the coast of Cape Hatteras, N.C. (Jul. 27, 2002) – U.S. Navy divers assigned to Mobile Diving and Salvage Unit 2 (MDSU-2) display some of the many artifacts recovered from the site around the sunken civil war-era ironclad USS Monitor. MDSU-2 is home ported at the Little Creek Amphibious Base in Norfolk, Va. MDSU-2, and is currently assisting the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to recover the ship’s gun turret, 11-inch Dahlgren cannons, and other artifacts from the historic vessel. Artifacts recovered from the site will eventually be on public display in the Mariners’ Museum in Newport News, Va. The famed warship sank during a storm Dec. 31, 1862, off Cape Hatteras, N.C., while being towed to Beaufort, S.C. Four officers and 12 men were lost with the ship.
