Summary[edit]

Description The U.S. Navy destroyer USS Shaw (DD-373) transferring survivors of USS Porter (DD-356) between Shaw and the battleship USS South Dakota (BB-57) on 28 October 1942. Porter had been torpedoed and sunk two days earlier, during the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands. Photographed from on board the South Dakota, one of whose 40 mm quad gun mounts, covered with canvas, is in the foreground.
