Title
English: U.S.S. Seattle crew rowing in Elliott Bay, Seattle, ca. 1926
Description
English:

Workers at the naval shipyard at Camden, New Jersey, laid the keel for the armored cruiser "Washington" in 1903. Renamed the "Seattle" in 1916, the vessel served as the flagship of the U.S. Navy's Atlantic Fleet. (A flagship carries the commanding officer of the fleet.) The "Seattle" escorted nine American convoys to France during World War I and carried troops back to the United States after the war ended. From 1919 to 1927, the vessel served in the Pacific Fleet, sometimes as the flagship. In this photo, taken around 1926, the crew of the U.S.S. Seattle rows near Pier 1 on Seattle's waterfront.
