Summary[edit]

Description The U.S. Navy destroyer USS Gearing (DD-710) in heavy seas in the Atlantic. Gearing tried to refuel from the fleet oiler USS Salamonie (AO-26) with winds reaching up to 110 kph when SN George D. Shack was washed overboard. GM2 Lawrence W. Beckhaus dived overboard form Salamonie and rescued Shack. Beckhaus later received the Navy and Marine Corps Medal from RADM John C. Daniel, Commander Destroyer Force Atlantic.
