Summary[edit]

Description The U.S. Navy aircraft carrier USS Essex (CV-9) at sea, with an overload of aircraft on her flight deck, 14 May 1944. She is carrying at least 36 Grumman TBF Avenger, 14 Grumman F6F Hellcat and 70 Curtiss SB2C Helldiver, probably to build up fleet stocks for the Marianas Operation. Between April and November 1944 Essex wore the Camouflage Measure 32, Design 6/10D.
