Description
English: The United States Navy Nuclear Task Force 1 (TF-1), shown in silhouette during training maneuvers in the Mediterranean Sea, is preparing to commence "Operation Sea Orbit", an around the world cruise, in July 1964. The aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CVAN-65) and the guided missile cruisers USS Long Beach (CGN-9), center, and USS Bainbridge (DLGN-25) composed the United States first nuclear powered surface task force. The 30,000 mile voyage, which commenced on 31 July 1964, displayed the self sustained and operational capabilities of those ships. Photograph released 24 July 1964.
