Description
English: The U.S. Navy aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CV-6) under attack by Japanese Aichi D3A2 dive bombers during the Battle of the Eastern Solomons, 24 August 1942. Enterprise received three direct bomb hits and four near misses in four minutes. 74 crewmembers were killed, 95 were wounded. Quick, hard work by damage control parties patched her up so that she was able to return to Hawaii under her own power.
The photo was taken from the heavy cruiser USS Portland (CA-33).
