Summary[edit]

Description

On December 7th, 1941, during the Japanese aerial attack on Pearl Harbor, the Arizona was quickly sunk thanks to Japanese aerial torpedoes quickly hitting its armament and fuel, causing a series of chain-reaction explosions on board. It only took nine minutes for the battleship to sink, and virtually no time for most of the crew to react, much less escape.

The Arizona remains today where it was sunk. In 1961, the portions of the ship (chimneys, artillery turrets like this, etc.) remaining above the water were removed, and a permanent memorial erected above the wreckage.

Yes, as seen here, remaining fuel on board continues to slowly leak - and it smells strong too. The authorities have let the leak continue as a reminder of the tragedy, but do have contingency plans in case the leak accelerates due to continued decay of the wreckage.

Since 1982, surviving crewmembers of the Arizona can elect to be interred in the hull of the battleship upon their death, so that they can forever rejoin their fallen comrades.

Visiting this spot in person is extremely emotional. Nobody leaves this place without becoming teary-eyed.
