Description
English: Marines and sailors from the Twentynine Palms, Calif.-based 1st Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, watch as Navy Lt. and military chaplain Richard A. Townes sets up sacrament and other Christian items at the Saint Michaels Chapel aboard the Marines base at Al Qa'im, Iraq, April 12, 2006. St. Michaels recently replaced the Marines old chapel, dubbed Soul Train, as their house of worship. Soul Train an Iraqi passenger boxcar was recently decommissioned as the Marines chapel here. The newly constructed chapel marked the end of the Soul Train's nearly three-year stretch as a house of prayer. The boxcar served as a chapel for many Marine and U.S. Army units that passed through the camp since Coalition Forces made their push to Baghdad in 2003. Due to the boxcar's small size, Marines here say they decided to build a new, and larger, chapel to house an increasing number of worshippers. The battalion, which arrived in Iraq more than a month ago, is part of Regimental Combat Team 7, which provides security and mentors Iraqi Security Forces in western Al Anbar Province, Iraq.
