Summary[edit]

Description The Urlas family housing area is a unique new community comprised of 106 units, 22 of which are low-energy Passivhäuser or “Passive Houses.” This is the first set of certified Passivhäuser built for the U.S. government world-wide. The PassivHaus units consume only one quarter of the energy demanded by traditional homes. Additionally, passive houses capture and recycle 92 percent of the waste heat from lighting fixtures, major appliances, heat pumps, exhaust air and even people or animals to allow the houses to heat themselves. The additional 84 units adhere to strict German EnEV energy standards making the entire Urlas housing community environmentally sustainable. Construction of the Urlas housing community is being managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Europe District.
