A BISON CALF AT THE FERMI NATIONAL ACCELERATOR LABORATORY SITE. THE FIRST AMERICAN BISON, A BULL AND FOUR COWS, WERE BROUGHT IN 1969 TO FERMILAB BY THE LABORATORY'S FIRST DIRECTOR, ROBERT WILSON. HE DID THIS IN AN EFFORT TO RECOGNIZE FERMILAB'S PRAIRIE HERITAGE. IN 1971, THE ILLINOIS DEPARTMENT OF CONSERVATION ADDED 21 MORE BISON. THE CURRENT HERD FOUND ON THE LABORATORY SITE ARE DESCENDANTS OF THOSE FIRST ANIMALS. For more information or additional images, please contact 202-586-5251. |
